The masked downhill race is organized at the nearby Črni vrh (Black Summit) on Shrove Sunday. Masks parodying real or current events are usually favourites but children’s masks are also welcome.
Each year during the blooming of the daffodils, the Golica Tourism Association organizes a traditional cultural and musical programme to select the most beautiful of daffodils – Miss Daffodil.
Every second Saturday in September, the border municipalities of Slovenia’s Jesenice and Austria’s St. Jakob – that areas united by Rožca Valley as they are divided – organize a friendly meeting for all outdoors enthusiasts who love the mountain highlands, beautiful natural surroundings and plenty of good humour.
Thanks to its picturesque landscape and the natural beauty of the Julian Alps that is sure to leave a lasting impression, the Gorenjska region (also known as Upper Carniola) is probably Slovenia’s best known landscape.
Visitors will certainly be inspired by the views of the beautiful Bled and Bohinj Lakes as well as the magnificent peaks of the Julian and Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Select from among a plethora of outdoor activities in the Kranjska Gora resorts or walk through well preserved towns like Radovljica, Kranj and Škofja Loka that feature medieval walled-in town centres with specialized museums and interesting shops. And that’s not all…
Triglav, Slovenia’s highest peak, lies in the heart of Triglav National Park, which protects many plant and animal species that are home to rocky mountain terrain, deep river gorges, highland karst potholes and pleasant green, wildflower meadows.
The Zgornjesavska dolina (Upper Sava Valley) lies on the north side of Mount Triglav. Nearby Kranjska Gora is a popular tourist destination that attracts summertime visitors for sports recreation in the outdoors (hiking, alpinism, cycling, horseback riding, paragliding, fishing). In the wintertime, Kranjska Gora is the site of the Vitranc Cup Alpine World Ski Championships and its well-groomed slopes serve to attract skiers and snowboarders throughout the season. Visitors to Kranjska Gora can also enjoy a visit to the casinos or wellness spas, while kids can revel in the home of the well-loved children’s folk hero, Kekec. Nestled in the shelter of the surrounding 2000m peaks, nearby Planica is a springboard for the world’s best ski jumpers as they compete in the World Ski Jumping Championships each year. The region surrounding the Julian Alps is made complete by picturesque fresh water lakes. With its natural thermal springs and pleasant atmosphere, Slovenia’s alpine jewel Bled, home to the legendary island that sits in the middle of Bled Lake and the medieval castle perched atop a cliff steeply above it, has been attracting visitors from around the world for centuries. Well-arranged swimming areas, hotels with swimming pools, walking trails, tennis and golf courses, a casino, the Lesce airport, pristine surrounding nature and cultural attractions provide plenty of reasons to visit. Not far from the lake is the extraordinary Vintgar Gorge, carved into a breathless natural landscape by the precarious and ever meandering Radovna River rapids. Ski resorts Vogel, Kobla and Soriška planina inspire skiers with their natural beauty and excellent runs while the regions in which they lie boast a rich ethnological heritage with many interesting cultural and religious sites.
Those who love cultural heritage can also opt for a trip to the old town of Radovljica or take a cultural heritage tour in Žirovnica and visit the birthplace of Slovenia’s greatest poet, France Prešeren, in Vrba.
